Schloss Eckartsau is a building that was converted from a castle into a hunting lodge. The Eckartsauer family, who owned the castle, was first mentioned in a document in 1175.
In 1760, Emperor Franz I, Maria Theresa's husband, bought the castle. In 1797 it was transferred to the family foundation of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine by their grandson, Emperor Franz II. After the death of Maria Theresa in 1780, however, the palace fell into disrepair.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand had it completely renovated from 1896 to 1897 and the parts that had already been demolished rebuilt. The castle park was also redesigned at that time.
With the Habsburg Law of April 3, 1919, the Habsburg family fund was taken over by the state without compensation. The castle, which is now in the Donau-Auen National Park, became the property of the Republic of Austria and is managed by the Austrian Federal Forests.
As a museum, the castle has also been awarded the museum seal of approval.
