A Covid-19 case has been confirmed at a primary school in the city.

Parents and carers have today received a letter from the headteacher Kerry Hill, at Eyres Monsell in Leicester, saying there has been an infection at the 360-pupil school in Simmins Crescent.

Pupils in a Foundation Stage 2 class have been told to self-isolate for 10 days.

Mrs Hill did not say whether it was a child or a member of staff who had contracted the virus but said the school was following national guidance.

The positive test at the school follows a virus case at the Thurnby Mead Primary Academy in Thurnby Lodge, Leicester, which the school found out about on Sunday, leading to children in Years four and five self-isolating.

The seven-day virus infection rate in Leicester continues to fall and now stands at 59.3 cases per 100,000 people though that is still more than double the national average for England, which is 24.8 cases per 100,000.

The city’s infection rate has been steadily falling since mid January when it was nearly 300 cases per 100,000 people.
