Haltungsinformationen

Pelagia noctiluca (Forsskål, 1775)

Die Leuchtqualle (Pelagia noctiluca), man nennt sie auch Feuerqualle) ist eine Schirmqualle aus der Familie der Pelagiidae. Sie gehört damit zu den wenigen europäischen Quallen, deren Nesselkapseln die menschliche Haut durchdringen können.

Sie leuchtet schwach (Biolumineszenz).

Pelagia noctiluca macht kein sessiles Polypenstadium durch, die adulten Tiere entlassen im Herbst voll entwickelte Jungmedusen.

Man trifft sie meist in wärmeren Meeren (z.B. auch Mittelmeer) und dabei dann in Schwärmen. Sie leben von Zooplankton, aber laut diversen Quellen auch von Heringslarven.

Die übliche Beute dieser Qualle sind Heringslarven und anderes Zooplankton.

Tentakellänge bis 1 Meter, das Tier erreicht selber nur 10 cm.
Das Nesselgift löst starke Schmerzen aus, nachfolgend bilden sich Bläschen, die aber nach einer Weile in der Regel wieder abheilen.
