It was a murder which shook America to its core.

The six-year-old beauty queen who was found murdered in her own basement.

And now, almost 20 years since JonBenet Ramsay's tragic death, a new documentary is set to throw fresh light on the unsolved case.

JonBenet was just six-years-old when she was found dead in the basement of her parent's red-brick Tudor home in Boulder, Colorado, the day after Christmas in 1996.

She had been reported missing by her parents eight hours earlier, after they had found a ransom note demanding $118,000 for the safe return of their little girl.

JonBenet's body was ultimately found by her father John covered with a blanket and with a cord twisted around her neck. Her wrists had been bound and she had duct tape over her mouth.

The little girl, who had won titles including Little Miss Colorado in 1995, had been strangled and had suffered a fracture to her skull.

The case became one of the most publicised murders in American history, but has remained unsolved.

In the aftermath of JonBenet's death, suspicion initially fell on her family, the only people known to have been in the home at the time of her murder.

Her father John, a computer executive, and mother Patsy, a former Miss West Virginia, both appeared on CNN to insist they had nothing to do with her death, describing the speculation as "nauseating beyond belief".

It wasn't until 2008 that DNA technology officially cleared them of any involvement.

Her brother Burke, nine at the time, was also under suspicion, but he too was cleared by DNA.

Allegations surrounding Burke were splashed across the news and John later told how he desperately tried to shield his son from the wild accusations.

Burke eventually found out when he saw a newspaper while at the supermarket with his mother.

In an interview with the Daily Beast in 2008, John said: "The headlines from a tabloid screamed out that Burke had done it.

"She [Patsy] dropped her produce and rushed Burke out, but the damage had been done."

JonBenet's mother Patsy died from ovarian cancer in 2006, aged 49.

In an upcoming interview with Dr Phil, Burke, now 29, will break his silence about his sister's death.

In a teaser for the episode, he says: "I remember my mom searching my room that night saying, 'Where's my baby? Where's my baby?"

Speaking about why he decided to do the interview, he said: "I know people think I did it; that my parents did it. I know that we were suspects. I want to honour her memory by doing this interview. I don't want anyone to forget."

In one eerie moment in the interview, Burke also describes seeing his sister's dead body, telling the interviewer: "I remember the viewing. The casket was small. Her eyes were closed."

To mark the 20th anniversary of JonBenet's death, CBS, Lifetime, Investigation Discovery, and Dr. Phil will all screen US documentaries about the murder.

On Tuesday, CBS released a trailer for their six-hour docu-series, titled The Case of JonBenet Ramsey, which hopes to find out what really happened to the six-year-old.

In the trailer, a retired FBI special agent says: "This little girl's homicide to this date has not been resolved. In my opinion, I think we can change that right now."

The CBS series will bring together people who worked on the case 20 years ago and also new faces who will used advanced forensics to delve deeper into the mystery surrounding her murder.

The show will premiere on September 18.
