The altitude of 687 m above sea level makes Obervellach a climatic health-resort, delighting visitors with fresh air, crystal-clear water and pristine nature. From the local mountain Polinik you can enjoy far-reaching views into the surrounding mountains. But you can do more than just look at them, in the Kreuzeck- and Reisseck Group you’ll find numerous wonderful hiking trails and mountain tours.
Active in the mountains
Lace up your mountain boots and strap on your backpack, because starting from Obervellach and Kolbnitz you can reach the most scenic hikes and mountain tours in the region in the blink of an eye. Having made your “way up” on the Kreuzeck Panoramic Funicular, you can start your hike taking in the natural beauty and unspoilt, pristine nature amidst a breathtaking alpine world.
Skiing & winter sports
Winter is all about ski sports. In Mallnitz Valley, near Obervellach and Kolbnitz, you’ll find besides the ski area Ankogel, also Carinthia’s only glacier ski area, the Mölltal Glacier. At 3,122 m above sea level, in addition to reliable snow conditions, winter sports fans will find optimal conditions for practising, relaxing or enjoying the views almost all year round. Old and young can also practice their swings at various smaller ski areas and local ski lifts.
Wild water
All around Obervellach the wet element above all delights visitors from near and far. When the Möll River makes its way through our valley, it forms great rapids and challenging sections, which are popular especially with rafting fans, kayakers or whitewater fanatics. When canyoning or in the Groppenstein Gorge, go in search of the wild waters and discover wonderful natural landscapes between the mountains, valleys and the rushing waters of the national park region.
Health with Schroth therapy
Obervellach also has something truly special to offer found nowhere else in Austria in this form. Farmer Josef Schroth invented the healing effect of therapeutic fasting in the 18th-century, and to this day the so-called Schroth therapy is a true highlight for those visiting Obervellach. Combined with the healthy effects of the climatic health-resort you can recharge your batteries, get pampered from head to toe and feel the healthy effect in every fibre of your body.
