International best-selling author Dean Koontz has dropped $10.475 million on a contemporary Mediterranean-style estate in Irvine’s Shady Canyon, his second purchase in the guard-gated community in six months.

In November, the prolific master of modern suspense and his wife, Gerda, bought an $11.54 million mansion within walking distance of the new property.

Their latest acquisition, first reported by Variety’s Dirt.com, is a seven-bedroom, 12,000-square-foot house built in 2008 on well over a half-acre with views of the 6th fairway at Shady Canyon Golf Club and hills. Highlights include a movie theater, a home gym and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

The property also has a sauna and steam room, temperature-controlled wine cellar and bars throughout the house, from the expansive great room to the master suite, which includes two closets, a fireplace and a large balcony.

In the master bathroom are a spa tub and steam shower.

Downstairs on the main floor is the gourmet kitchen equipped with a pair of Sub-Zero refrigerators, three Wolf ovens, and a large island with unique marble countertops.

The main level also features a grand foyer with soaring ceilings, grand living room and library, as well as an elevator.

Lena Ghezel of Compass was the listing agent when the property closed on May 6, down $275,000 from the asking price of $10.75 million in October 2019. Evan Corkett and Steve High of Villa Real Estate represented the couple.

Dean and Gerda Koontz have bought and sold other multi-million dollar properties along the Southern California coastline.

In late April, the couple sold their nearly 30,000-square-foot estate on 2.5 acres in Newport Coast in an off-market deal, as first reported in the Wall Street Journal. The buyer is entrepreneur Glenn Stearns, who paid a record-breaking $50 million for the house.

Koontz, 74, has published more than 100 novels and sold more than 500 million copies worldwide. His latest is “Devoted,” a thriller about a non-verbal autistic boy and his loyal dog who join forces to fight a murderer fixated on the boy’s mother.
