If you look for a combination of spectacular nature and adventure on your camping holidays, this could be the right place for you. In a magical alpine setting surrounded by meadows, orchards and forests, family-run Camping Palfau is located in Landl’s Gesäuse National Park and is the springboard to rafting and canyoning adventures on the Salzatal river as well as hiking and cycling in the mountains. The pitches are scattered across various tree-shaded terrains – out of high season you can pick your own spot – all with a sunny location and mountain views. Facilities across the campsite include a communal firepit, electric hook-ups and water, as well as wifi in the public areas. Drinks, coffee and ice cream are available 24/7 on a self-serve basis, and a small essentials store is within a few minutes’ walk, along with a wooden, chalet-style restaurant that serves hot food until 8pm. On summer evenings, film screenings are held at the site.

Liked: The facilities are amazing. There is plenty of place to set up your tent, benches to have lunch under the trees, electricity right next to the spots and also water. How to forget about the incredible view of the landscapes and the peace during the afternoon and night. Bathrooms and toilets were super clean, hot coffee always there for a small price, and cold drinks and beers as well!

Liked: What an absolutely beautiful campsite. The area the campsite is based in has the most incredible natural beauty and Camping Palfau has done everything to emulate this in their own setting. The reception area and facilities are the nicest, newest, cleanest we’ve ever encountered. The pitches are large and provide good quality electricity. We only came for 2 nights as part of our journey home from Southern Italy, but we wished we could stay longer. It was so quiet and the night time sky was so clear. Wow wow wow for this campsite!

Disliked: Only a few issues, which were morning delivery lorries/vans that did disturb the peace and quiet around 7am. Also, no chemical waste point, which is stated on pitchup but I would have preferred to see that mentioned in the description as I have never been to a campsite where there isn’t chemical waste. They did say there were plans to get it installed soon. Such a shame they don’t have a pool, hot tub, steam room etc as that would make this campsite the best in Europe!

Liked: Gyönyörű környék, tiszta mosdók. Ital és jégkrém utólagos, bizalmi elszámolással. A sátor mellé lehet állni az autóval. Óriási füves terület. A szolgáltatások a raftingolókhoz vannak elsősorban igazítva, amit érdemes előre lefoglalni. Barátságos személyzet.

Disliked: Autóval kell menni a kirándulóhelyekre, hegyi ösvényekről szegényes információ. Reggelit nem lehet rendelni a kempinghez, noha a szállóvendégeknek lehet.

Disliked: There are busy times at weekends when rafters and canyoners arrive to be transferred to their activities. Some of them can party quite load but overall this didn’t detract from a great stay

Local attractions

Camping Palfau is an ideal starting point for whitewater tours on the Salzatal river nearby – you can book rafting and canyoning tours directly on site as well as hire all the gear you need. Walking excursions can be organised too, including testing hikes past cliffside waterfalls in the awe-inspiring Palfauer Wasserlochklamm gorge (five minutes’ drive). The UNESCO-listed Nature and Geopark Styrian Eisenwurzen (25 minutes) is another fantastic spot for adrenaline-inducing whitewater rafting as well as exploring deep inside subterranean limestone complexes like Kraus Cave (10 minutes). Thankfully, the geopark is also home of gentler pursuits: Mendlingtal Adventure World (five minutes’ drive) highlights the region’s forest heritage with tours of an historic forgeman’s house, grain mill and a bakery. See how wood was once transported down the river at the Austrian Forest Museum Silvanum (15 minutes), where there are also sledge and raft rides to keep the kids entertained, or you can tire them out further with high-ropes courses and archery lessons.

Admission

Admission is only permitted after registering at reception.
All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Arrivals and departures

Late arrivals must notify the park as soon as possible. Your booking will be held for 24 hours. After this period the management reserves the right to relet your unit.
Units will be allocated on arrival.

Dogs

Dogs must be kept on leads and supervised at all times.

Extras

Motorbike(s) can be brought instead of the car(s) included.

General

Entertainment and activities are available between 28/04 and 08/10.
In the event of a complaint, please speak to reception immediately. Complaints which are not brought to the management's attention during your stay cannot be dealt with once you have left the site.
Portable Speakers are not permitted.
Public areas are non-smoking.
Quiet hours must be respected between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m..
Radio, music and TV players must be kept at a low volume. Car doors and boots must be closed quietly.
