Loretto, Tennessee, History

In the early 19th century, Loretto was a stagecoach station famed as "Glen Rock." In 1870, a few German Catholic immigrants came into the area, and afterward, they established a new city shortly.

The immigrants' gathering was formed, and due to the railroad in the 1880s, Loretto succeeded as a lumber town.

Other historic buildings, establishments, and banks, including the Bank of Loretto building, were built in the 1920s. That building was renovated in 2013 and now home to Nana's Pizzeria

Loretto Milling Company, founded in 1895 and still open for business, is one of the city's oldest family-run businesses.

The historic downtown area began its downfall caused by the construction of U.S. Route 43 to the east of the district in the 1940s when its commercial activity shifted to the new highway.

Like many Southern towns, Loretto is applying for grants to help improve the older historic district. Loretto is also Home of the Loretto High School Mustangs.
