Southeast of Zurich and southwest of Sankt Gallenkirch, the Gargellen ski area has 15 pistes served by 5 lifts with a maximum descent of 875m. At this challenging ski area, we have found that the best time of year for snowboarding is the months of January and February.
From our experience, there are several options for advanced snowboarders at Gargellen. If you are looking for a challenging adventure, consider snowboarding the Nidla downhill variant. This northwest facing slope offers a 500m descent down ungroomed conditions. The terrain is not avalanche controlled so full avalanche gear is highly recommended. In addition, there are four other ungroomed ski routes with three of them rated extreme and unpatrolled.
After a long morning of Gargellen snowboarding, there are two good on-mountain options for lunch. Make sure to check out either Obwaldhutte or Kessl Hutte.
PRO TIP: If you're looking for more snowboarding, head over to the nearby Golm ski area. It has 17km of ungroomed ski routes.
Overall, Gargellen is the 83rd most popular snowboard & freeride destination of all 92 snowboarding resorts in Austria.
