Presidio Park Plant Survey

Acacia longifolia

GOLDEN WATTLE

Fabaceae family SSE Australia (coastal)

Joseph Banks, botanist on Captain James Cook's Australian 1770 expedition is credited with having documented, procured samples, and brought back to England the Acacia longifolia. These plants are frost and drought resistant and therefore were planted extensively in Southern California during the early 20th century on coastal slopes and freeway embankments for soil and erosion control. Also called the coastal wattle, the leaves can be crushed, mixed with water and used as soap.
