Scharnitz, Seefeld, and Mittenwald

Towns to base hiking and skiing adventures from, right on the border of Austria and Germany

The Seefeld area is on Tirol’s high plateau. It sits 600 meters above Innsbruck and the valley floors around it and includes five separate towns of various sizes - Seefeld, Leutsach, Mösern, Reith, and all the way up to Scharnitz on the German border.

In the winter, the Seefeld area is a huge destination for cross-country skiing. Because it’s on a plateau, it’s relatively flat compared to other parts of Tirol, which makes it perfect for both cross country skiing and winter hiking. There are ski buses and ski schools for cross-county specifically, and if you’re lucky, you’ll see the pros coming to train for the championships here. There’s also downhill skiing, and the variety of activities makes it a great place if you have a group who can’t agree on what winter activity to do.

In the summer, there are tons of hiking trails. The trails around Seefeld tend to be easier and more accessible, while some of the trails near Scharnitz are much more challenging. The Pleisenspitze near Scharnitz is one of my favorite hikes.

Getting there is easy - there are frequent trains from either Munich or Innsbruck, and the train ride is worth it for the views.
