He has a younger sister Jane who was born in New York when the family relocated there from 1958-1961.
The musician chose Billy Idol as his stage name after a schoolteacher described him as "idle."
He first joined the band Chelsea as a guitarist in 1976.
When he left the band he co-founded Generation X with his Chelsea bandmate Tony James and became lead singer.
In 1981 Billy moved to New York and embarked on a solo career with former Kiss manager Bill Aucoin.
