EN - MILS?

The LEGO Modular Integrated Landscaping System (MILS) has taken the world of LEGO enthusiasts by storm, revolutionizing the way builders create and design their LEGO urban landscapes. MILS offers a flexible and modular approach to landscaping that allows builders to seamlessly integrate roads, buildings, parks and natural landscapes into cohesive and immersive LEGO displays. In this article, we dive into the world of MILS and explore its features, benefits and endless possibilities for LEGO builders.

The concept behind MILS

At its core, MILS is an innovative framework that allows builders to create interconnected base plates that fit seamlessly into a larger LEGO city layout. It provides a standardized system of baseplates, road sections and connecting mechanisms, making expansion and reconfiguration easy. The concept aims to enhance the realism and visual appeal of LEGO cities by providing a consistent, modular foundation for building different landscapes.

MILS Example 1

Flexibility and customization

MILS gives builders unprecedented flexibility and customization options. It allows them to design and create intricate landscapes, with roads, parks, rivers, mountains and other elements. The modular nature of MILS means builders can easily add or remove sections, rearrange layouts or integrate new structures without disrupting the overall design.

Integration and connectivity

One of the standout features of MILS is its focus on integration and connectivity. Standardized baseplate dimensions and connection mechanisms allow seamless attachment of different MILS modules, creating a cohesive and visually appealing cityscape. Builders can effortlessly combine their creations with those of other LEGO enthusiasts, promoting collaboration and community building within the LEGO community.

MILS Example 2

Realistic terrain and landscapes

MILS facilitates the creation of realistic terrain and landscapes, bringing LEGO city plans to life. Modular road sections and ground plates with different heights allow builders to design undulating landscapes, hills, valleys and other geographical features. This makes it possible to add parks, forests, lakes and other natural elements that enhance the authenticity of the LEGO city.

Expansion and adaptability

One of the biggest advantages of MILS is its expandability and adaptability. As LEGO builders' collections grow, they can easily expand their city plans by adding new MILS modules. Whether it's new buildings, parks or even expansion of the road network, MILS provides a framework that seamlessly accommodates growth and change, allowing the LEGO city to grow with the builder's creativity.

LEGO Cities Exhibit

MILS allows LEGO enthusiasts to present their city creations in a cohesive and professional manner. The modular design allows each part of the layout to be easily transported, enabling public exhibitions and conventions. The integrated road network and attention to detail in the landscaping make MILS-based city layouts a delight for builders and viewers alike.

The LEGO Modular Integrated Landscaping System (MILS) is a game-changer in the world of LEGO cityscapes. Its flexible, modular approach allows builders to create intricate and realistic landscapes, seamlessly integrating roads, buildings and natural elements. MILS promotes collaboration, adaptability and endless possibilities for LEGO builders and inspires the creation of captivating and immersive LEGO cities. With MILS, the only limitation is the imagination of the builder, who continues to push the limits of their creativity and take their LEGO layouts to new heights.

Build your own

Want to convert your LEGO® town or landscape to a MILS system yourself? Then we'll explain how to build it. The base consists of a 32x32 baseplate with a grid of Lego bricks on top. Often there are LEGO Technic bricks on the sides in order to click different MILS modules together. Also, people who often go to fairs make a kind of code around the corners with 2x2 plates in order to keep the owners' different modules apart. On top of this comes a layer of ordinary plates. This way you have a solid base to build your LEGO building or landscape on and possibly to transport it.

Mils 1

Now for this way of building MILS sheets you still need quite a lot of parts. But with the arrival of the 16x16 Technic Brick (65803) it is even easier to make a MILS system. You only need 4 16x16 technic bricks and a 32x32 base plate. Putting these together gives you the same height as the other plate with far fewer parts.

Now you know what MILS are and how to make them. Hopefully you can apply it to your own Buildings or LEGO town.
