Tights Season Is Upon Us, And Chanel Has The Chicest Pair

Chanel’s instantly recognisable double C logo has stood the test of time. A core emblem of the maison since it was founded, it has taken the form of embellishments on buttons, shiny gold clasps on handbags, sparkling statement earrings, and even graffiti motifs. 

Billie Eilish showcased a stylish take on the logo at the Oscars earlier this year, which she attended in an emo take on the classic cream bouclé suit, adorned with double C brooches and jewels. Meanwhile, British Vogue’s former cover star Adwoa Aboah took it one step further at the 2018 Brit Awards, where her every smile revealed her double C tooth gem. Now, the storied logo has made its way onto a £330 pair of tights that is fast becoming a street-style must-have.

First, it was all about Chanel leggings. Adorned with alphabet gems and logos, the designer leggings have reigned supreme on the pavements outside the shows in recent seasons, where they were worn by the likes of Camille Charrière and Leandra Medine at Paris Fashion Week. But after creative director Virginie Viard styled buttery leather pirate boots with monogram tights for autumn/winter 2020, fashion fans’ focus swiftly shifted from leggings to luxe hosiery.

Black styles were worn with fuzzy pistachio tailored skirts and jackets, tweed minis and button-up dresses; while snowy tights appeared on Mona Tougaard and Hyun Ji Shin, who walked arm-in-arm with Gigi Hadid to close the show.

Simple and enduring, the double C has become a symbol of timeless luxury. So it’s about time it entered our intimates drawer. Who wouldn’t want to pep up their winter boots and trench combo with a scattering of Chanel? Danish influencer Pernille Teisbæk clearly approves – she shared a snap of the tights with her 899,000-strong following captioned, “If I was going out”. French actress Céline Sallette is also a fan.

Other distinctive designer monograms – like those of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Fendi, to name three – are similarly modish. Several decades on from the logomania of the ’90s and Noughties, catalysed by Dapper Dan’s bootleg prints, influencers and editors are opting into the monogram trend once again. And now that Virginie is decorating chic legs with double Cs, our love for logos is going nowhere.
