Bürs Castle, today: Rosenegg Castle

  • Mentioned for the first time in a document in 1382, the complex was probably built around the middle of the 13th century. Founded by the Counts of Werdenberg, the castle passed to Albrecht III of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg-Bludenz during a division of the household estates in 1382. On September 28/29, 1405, the castle was burned down during the Appenzell War. After the death of Albrecht III, the castle became the property of the Habsburgs and was granted as an Austrian fiefdom. The dilapidated keep was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in 1898 – 1900 by Hans Schultheiß and after him by tobacco factory owner Wilhelm Kissenberth. Around 1939, a new reconstruction and extension took place with the removal of the neo-Gothic form elements and the addition of a one-story residential building, arranged by Dr. Ernst Mahle.

Today, only the foundations of the original small complex with a five-story residential tower and surrounding wall remain. The castle received its present name “Rosenegg” in the 19th century.
