Back<strong>in</strong> June 1998 he had just opened <strong>the</strong>"Museum <strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong>". This <strong>in</strong>stallation<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chateau</strong> <strong>St</strong>. Germa<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>Gruyeres, Switzerland, has <strong>the</strong>largest and most comprehensive collectionof known and unknownworks of <strong>the</strong> Swiss artist on shows<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n. At this time he crepdfcreated by www.<strong>little</strong>giger.comHowever, those who believed that<strong>Giger</strong> had fulfilled his life longdream and would draw back to bea satisfied pensioner were completelywrong. Let us look back:After young Hans Ruedi's ma<strong>in</strong>teacher at <strong>the</strong> art college <strong>in</strong> Zurichhad told him many times "<strong>Giger</strong>,stop do<strong>in</strong>g such ill shapes thatlook like cow's throats!", <strong>the</strong> careerof <strong>the</strong> Swiss artist could almostbe guessed already. On 14April 1980, about 2 years after hehad been given <strong>the</strong> order to workon a Science Fiction horror moviethat was to become a worldwidesuccess, <strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong> was grantedOne project that had been sleep<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> "safe of ideas" of <strong>the</strong>Swiss artist for long was <strong>the</strong> implementationof a bar designed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>typical <strong>Giger</strong> style. 1988 <strong>the</strong> projectwas to become reality and <strong>the</strong>first <strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> with 4 floorswas to open <strong>in</strong> Tokyo. Unfortunately, due to strict build<strong>in</strong>g legislation, many designs of <strong>the</strong> artistcould not be implemented and so<strong>the</strong> bar was not licensed to use <strong>the</strong>name "<strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong>". In <strong>the</strong> meantime,<strong>the</strong> bar is closed. It took fourmore years until <strong>the</strong> first official<strong>Giger</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> opened <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hometown of <strong>the</strong> Alien creator. In <strong>the</strong> end, <strong>the</strong> decisionwas made to use a mixtureof fibre glass and cement. As <strong>HR</strong><strong>Giger</strong> had already completed <strong>the</strong>designs, <strong>the</strong> workers started toimplement <strong>the</strong> firstmould for <strong>the</strong> roomsas well as <strong>the</strong> <strong>new</strong> furniture.Months of <strong>in</strong>tensivework went by before <strong>the</strong>first piece of furniturecould be <strong>in</strong>tegrated with<strong>the</strong> help of RonaldBrandt and Wolfgang Holz. RogerCottier, <strong>the</strong> architect of <strong>the</strong> museum, assisted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole process. What is now wait<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> visitorsis <strong>the</strong> probably most perfectentrance <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> world of <strong>HR</strong><strong>Giger</strong> that exists at present. Skeletonscover <strong>the</strong> walls up to <strong>the</strong> 4meter high church-like ceil<strong>in</strong>g.You get <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>g that you havelanded right <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> stomach ofsome beast, because <strong>the</strong> boneslook so realistic. No trace ofwarmth, everyth<strong>in</strong>g is cool graythat fits perfectly to <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong>walls. No carpet to disturb <strong>the</strong>eye, but <strong>the</strong>re is a stone floor withtypical <strong>Giger</strong> ornaments. Everyth<strong>in</strong>gfits toge<strong>the</strong>r and it feels like<strong>the</strong> monster could come dash<strong>in</strong>garound <strong>the</strong> corner at any moment.<strong>The</strong> room is 70 x 100 meters largeand can hold up to 70 <strong>Giger</strong> fansAAA 74who may sit down <strong>in</strong> those not so<strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g chairs with <strong>the</strong>ir high,skeleton-like back-rests - calledHarkonnen-chairs. <strong>The</strong>y will beastonished about <strong>the</strong> fact that<strong>the</strong>se are quite comfortable andreally make you want to stay, while your eyes constantly f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>new</strong> details on <strong>the</strong> walls, <strong>the</strong> ceil<strong>in</strong>gand <strong>the</strong> floor.<strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong> has certa<strong>in</strong>ly made oneof his dreams (or should we saynightmares) cometrue here. For <strong>the</strong>first time, <strong>the</strong>re wereno deceptions or limits likewhen he worked at <strong>the</strong>"Alien", when he often sat<strong>in</strong> his hotel room frustratedbecause once aga<strong>in</strong>one of his designs had to bechanged or completely reworked. Also, <strong>the</strong>re were no problems withbuild<strong>in</strong>g regulations this time - this<strong>Giger</strong> <strong>Bar</strong> has been created exactlyaccord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> master's plans. And now? What is com<strong>in</strong>g next?<strong>HR</strong> <strong>Giger</strong> will certa<strong>in</strong>ly not stayidle - he never has. He has alwaysworked on sculptures <strong>in</strong>parallel, like <strong>the</strong> huge shoes on<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>iature island Harakka <strong>in</strong>front of <strong>the</strong> coast of F<strong>in</strong>land or<strong>the</strong> biomechanoid sculpture tha<strong>the</strong> has created as a trophy for <strong>the</strong>Woodstock Body & Arts Festival. Moreover, <strong>the</strong>re is his own jewelryseries and he is also work<strong>in</strong>gon <strong>the</strong> designs for a <strong>new</strong> Europeanmovie. In <strong>the</strong> second half of<strong>the</strong> year, a <strong>new</strong> exhibition is go<strong>in</strong>gto captivate visitors from nearand far.
