NEW INFORMATION ABOUT SPOKES WHEELS

I stole a little time from my family to go and test the correction of the obj file. on the Potez. (see post above). My family knowing that I am passionate has forgiven me.

Before going any further, I strongly point out that the comments made here are not denigration of other people's work or negative criticism. We are 2 people facing an identical problem to solve each for a different project. We each expose our comments on our topic, just hoping that we will find suitable solutions. So there is no criticism here of Leen de Jagger's work. Thanks for seeing it like this.

Being a biochemist, I preferred to take the test with the material made available by leen de Jager (corrections of obj file and textures) and not mine so as not to interfere (as we do in laboratories).

I would point out at the outset that the following does not disparage the work done by Leen de Jagger. I simply note the points that this method does not seem to correct, unless I was totally mistaken in my manipulations. That said, this corrects in half the point of the central axis which is now visible, but not until the end.

I am attaching my corrections to the obj file. in case I made a mistake. If I made a mistake in my test, I am sorry, please tell me.

Here are the results:

1 The correction of obj. push the wheel inward, making the axis appear in the center, but it is too short (the axis)  and does not go to the center of the outer spokes. It is a sliding of the wheel inwards on a too short axis on the model. A correction must be done on the model.

2. The problem of the transparent rim (we see the sky through) remains present. In fact the rim is missing on the model. Perhaps there is a way to correct this on the obj file. But I am not an obj file specialist.

3. The brand name on the wheel. I already reported this to my friend Loïc (@Gouloo) several days ago when I wanted to put the "Michelin" brand in engraved black rubber. There are only two wheels (Tires) on the texture. The one on the left represents the left exterior and the right interior. The other represents the left outside and the right inside . Therefore one will be readable and the other will be reversed. and it's the same inside. If you do the opposite, you will find the same problem .... but reversed. We should have put on the texture 4 wheels,2 interior and 2 exterior. Maybe there is a way to correct this on the obj file. But I am not a specialist in obj files.

Here there are important limits to correct, even if the work of Leen de Jagger has brought a big plus ! (++)

Thanks for your attention about this issue and if someone has a better idea, he's welcome.

Here is one of last information about spoke wheels.

We are in relation Loïc (@gouloo) and I to try to correct his model by lengthening the central axis of the wheels and perhaps adding the rim. Which will bring a new update to Potez. However, this is not guaranteed, because Loïc is on other projects (many) and has no time left. So I have to convince him or to see with another 3D specialist friend. It will be a good final solution for the Potez for everyone.

As Leen de Jager rightly said in the presentation of his downloadable wheel files ... I quote: " We must never forget we are dealing with a model in a flightsim ( game if you like) and we always must make choices. Its not real and we should not want to get it real. "

If what I said above cannot be done, we will accept this intermediate solution and everyone can if he wants correct the obj file following his choice.

As for my liveries, I therefore made a choice. I'm going to use my own textures (maybe enhanced them a bit) and Leen de Jager's obj. correction (whose will be credited for that info) with small adjustments so that the wheel doesn't touch the landing gear too much.

Once my liveries are released, everyone is free to choose the spoked wheels he find the best for him. All are or will be on forum as downloadable free files.

Thanks to everyone 😊

SOLUTION FOR 3D SPOKED WHEELS FOUND IN ONE NIGHT

Dear friends,

I thought we could do better than an intermediate solution. So I spent the night on this and I am starting this afternoon again. There is still a lot of work and the release will certainly be after Christmas, but the solution is now at hand.

So I contacted a friend by phone and email (3D and aviation specialist) who gave me all advice to modify 3 Objects files (obj.) and create a pair of wheels. (Left wheel and Right wheel). This will make two more object files (Roue_D.obj and Roue_G.obj and of course 2 Png texture files, one for each of them) and above all to create a rim. This 2 objects will replace the Roue.obj. And of course, for integration, the acf will be also replaced.

So we have now two spoked 3D wheels on the Potez. Roue_D and Roue_G. Right in French is Droite (D) and Left in French is Gauche (G)

This corrects are the following:

  1. The rim is created and it is solid. (If you want, it is no longer transparent and you can no longer see the sky through).

  2. The wheels are at the correct distance from the landing gear hub.

  3. The internal axis is completely through. There is no longer any space between the axis and the external spokes.

  4. Having two wheels, now It will be possible to write the brand of the wheel without encountering the problem of reversing. The tires brand will be readable separately on each of the right and left wheels.

  5. The spokes are the diameter and quantity required for the weight of the aircraft. not too thin as on a bicycle, rather a big motorcycle or a vintage car.

Finally I will make further other improvements, but now it's Christmas and I will devote myself to my family life. We will resume this afterwards.

Of course, this work will be shared for free with all users.

Here are the pictures of the improvements I made last night.  (to see details, click on picture to enlarge it)

ABOUT POTEZ SPOKED WHEELS

Dear friends

On Leen's jagger post today, he admitted to having misidentified the location of the ATTR files. It does not matter, error is human and we only learn from our mistakes, not from our successes.

So I corrected according to his instructions the correct position of the ATTRs under "SPECULAR" in the Obj file. Thank you for this clarification.

Unfortunately, there remain for the Potez despite the good work of Leen de Jager some points which are not settled; and this for my Potez livery. (see below - Click to enlarge)

1441893809_prsentationroueldj.thumb.jpg.ca9af2cacabd210dead619e38176bff1.jpg

The wheels made by Leen de Jager can be used on other planes and are available for download on the forum. Thank Leen de Jager for this work.

Here are the points that I wanted to correct myself only for the wheels of the Potez. I explain them in my post today. Please Look my comment in the post  above

  1. I would like to use my own spokes textures representing the 1936 era, even if the modern ones made by Leen de Jager are very pretty.

  2. I would like to have an axis completely crossing the wheel, without a few missing centimeters.

  3. I would like a real solid rim with spokes that can be seen on both sides ans seen as metal rim.

  4. I wanted 2 separate wheels to be able to add the "Michelin" brand as engraved in black in rubber without encountering the problem of reversing the text on the right or left tire. (because of only one Roue.obj file).

That's what I did during last night (by installing 2 3D wheels for the Potez). I keep working on these wheels and as I said, it will take time to reach a good result. So, the delay of release is postponed.

I think that we have now serenely covered this problem and that we will be able to rest together with our families. 😊

Merry Christmas

Creation (Blender file) and installation (with planemaker) of real 3D wheels on the Potez. (Then creation of textures and other small parts).
There is still work to be done on this aircraft. Time flies. The release will not be for 2019

I wish you all a happy 2020 year in all aspects of life.

ABOUT POTEZ SPOKED WHEELS

For a person who has never done 3D with Blender ... where a specialist would have spent 4 hours, I spent 40 hours ... fun and pleasure (because what we learn, is never lost). I learned aroud 5 to 8 % of blender manipulations looking at same time a video tuto in French.

The tire valve had been forgotten on the wheel. It was placed as a separate object on the rim. Here some view of the rim and its valve in blender (interior, exterior and sides).

ABOUT 3D POTEZ SPOKED WHEELS

Dear friends,

Once the valve created and attached to the 3D wheel, I encounter a big problem of exporting the object (wheel + valve) into Planemaker. It seems that the added valve prevents the object from being inserted in planeMaker to be visible in XP.

After several hours of unsuccessful testing, I am forced to wait for answers from my Blender specialist friends to understand why the export does not work. This will delay the release of the Potez 25 with 3D wheel.

If anyone has an idea, can they send it to me by PM. because it is the last phase of the project before release and the project is currently blocked by this issue. Which is really sad because of a small valve. The importation of the wheel and the creation of the valve took me time, but were successful.

But the export (once the valve added) does not work and I do not understand why, even with the doc and the Xplane2Blender plugin. It may be a very small thing. But not being a 3D specialist, I am spinning around without result.

I am sorry.

Happy new year 😊

ABOUT 3D POTEZ SPOKED WHEELS ... and THE TIRE VALVE !

Dear Friends

An airplane tire valve is really tiny and invisible from a distance. You have to zoom in to get to the rim to see it. however it is an important element: No valve, no air in the tire ... no flight with the plane. 😂

Hours have been spent trying to figure out why Blender doesn't export the wheel with valve in Xplane despite multiple trials. It must be said that the forums are full of comments on this subject that Blender and Xplane, are not yet really compatible. A single plugin named "xplane2Blender" that has been updated multiple times becomes incompatible with the various Blender updates. Thanks to guys who made this plugin, but too bad that there is no real coordination between Blender and plugin's creators.

So the only thing left to do is to seek, try, seek, try again ... etc. it is what we have done two friends (one in the USA and the other in France). To finally find a solution. For a small valve that cannot be seen from a distance but which adds value to a spoke wheel. Perseverance pays. Now that the problem has been fixed between Blender and Xplane, we made two kinds of valves.

Yesterday I had nothing. Today I have to choose between two valves ... 🧐 I know what I'm going to do. I'll put a different one on each wheel (Joke) 🤣

Below are the 2 kinds of valves placed on the wheels of the Potez in flight over Morocco - Spanish. (Rio de Oro in 1936)

After this crossing of the desert, the work continues.

Cheers 😊

WIP Info about the new POTEZ S5 & P2  -  Ñ3 & Ñ4 in 4 version "White Belly" and "Green Fuselage" named:
Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle
Modification of the initial Potez 25 of my friend Loïc @gouloo with the written agreement of the author.
Modifications: Correction of many parts and elements of the fuselage, correction of the landing gear, wheel axle correction, adding an animated pilot, adding 2 3D spoked wheels ... and several other small modifications. This project is still underway for a version 2.0. The aircraft is no longer compatible with the original aircraft. EXCEPT for future new liveries and those that have already been created. These are two different models of the same aircraft. The initial, does not accept 3D. Do not mix their files!

➡️ To definitively end it with the 3D spoke wheels and 3D valve

After creating the 3D spoked wheels, the 3D valve and having a multitude of technical challenges due to the various versions of Blender and the various versions of the Xplane2blender plugin to import and integrate the wheels with valve to the Potez, I had fun creating 2 sort of valves (we had to find a little fun).

Not being a historian (or professional) of the air chamber valve, I looked in the documentation for the different retro valves (Schrader, Presta ... for connoisseurs), and the cap (large, pointed or other), I made the decision to choose between the two valves, the one that most closely resembled the Schrader with wide cap. The other having a more recent appearance.

I do not want to enter into endless discussions about the valves and my choice of valve, because this small object is invisible from a distance and you have to zoom in as much as possible to see it.

However, you all know, my attention to detail and I had to make this choice to get as close as possible to reality while knowing that we are in flight simulation and not in real life. (Hereafter pictures of my choice - Click pictures to enlarge)

valve1.thumb.jpg.3ed7e744e879da8a2a3a671016794f19.jpg valve2.thumb.jpg.02be681bce64b24d9be99da5a87f0c12.jpg

The work continues now for the finishing touches.

Here is how the final packages will be composed (approximately):

Zip file # 1 (for the new Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle)
1. Modified complete potez integrated 2 wheels with 3D spokes, my 4 liveries of the Spanish war of 1936. (This is a new Potez with a new name. It will have to be installed next to the initial Potez (absolutely NOT mixed with because not compatible with the initial one which does not not support 3D). It will therefore be a new plane named "Potez25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle" (with all the authorizations of the author of the initial Potez).
2. The user manual
3. Images and history of the Spanish War
4. As a bonus, a new animated pilot (with a nice mustache) in 3 versions (transparent glasses, green Rayban and blue Rayban)
NOTE: All existing and futur liveries will be compatible with this new aircraft, except that the wheels will be 3D spoked.

ZIP file # 2 (for the initial Potez 25)
1. My 4 liveries (SCW 1936) of Potez 25 to install on the initial Potez of @gouloo called "Potez 25" which does not have 3D wheels, but wheels with a metal wafer on the rim.
2. The user manual
3. Images and history of the Spanish War
4. As a bonus, a new animated pilot (with a nice mustache) in 3 versions (transparent glasses, green Rayban and blue Rayban)

The 3D wheels (with the recent valve style) will be installed on other more recent planes (ie P51 or other)

The release will take place during January 2020 depending on my availability.

Cheers

Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle

Learn from our mistakes. 3D chiral objects (The following will also help beginners in liveries creations or 3d creations)

Unfortunately while working on the wheels, I realized that when creating the wheel, (because only one was created and copied ... it would have been ridiculous to create two, if you can copy the same 🤣, especially since it is a long job).

As it is a right wheel and a left wheel, they act with textures in a chiral way (like our two hands). It is therefore necessary, when copying, to make a mirror image of the second wheel, so that there is a different interior and exterior.

This is why, if you want to write on a texture (the brand of the tire in this case for example), it will come out correct on one and inverted on the other. It is a recurring problem for 3D creators (Especially with a beginner in Blender like me)
who create two chiral objects, and forget to make a mirror image of one of the two. And we end up with two exteriors or two interiors.

It is this correction that I made today to correctly write the brand on the tire and not have an inverted mark on one of the wheels.

Not wanting to redo a tedious job on Blender, I did several tests and I found a trick to correct this problem on my wheel.

All is correct now as you can see below.

Cheers

Chris

The Michelin brand (French brand) was affixed to the 3D tire of the Potez 25 using the old method (1930s) of 3D rubber engraving (expanded technique).

I am currently reading several documents to continue this project. Work is progressing little by little.

The complete Michelin brand was affixed to the 3D tire of the Potez 25 - latest finishes before tests.

Dear friends, 😊

Finishing and marking of real 3D wheels made in France by the factories Michelin, Clermont-Ferrand. Michelin has been a famous tire manufacturer since 1889 to date. Its products are intended for all types of vehicles: cars, trucks, two wheels, planes, civil and agricultural engineering machinery. Michelin tires have fitted a multitude of French aircraft brands (Spad, Breguet, Potez and others). The airplane tire "PILOT" (developed between 1935 and 1937) is the one that responds best (as close as possible) according to various sources to the Potez of 1936, (even if the old planes intended to help the republican Spanish army  during the civil war of 1936 were often in poor condition with sometimes unconventional parts)

This is what led to my choice to equip the real 3D spoked wheels of the Potez 25 of the Spanish War, With the "MICHELIN PILOT TIRE" - The new Michelin Pilot (still produced in 2019) for propeller planes has been developed since 1935 to provide the maximum length of their tread and enhanced protection in all kinds of conditions.

History: Michelin has worked extensively for French aviation. In 1916, the first cemented runway for aviation was built in Clermont-Ferrand; it allows takeoff in all weathers of Breguet-Michelin aircraft produced for war in Michelin factories. The production will be of 57 planes in 1915, 141 in 1916, 264 in 1917 and 1422 in 1918. Michelin will thus produce nearly 3000 planes for the French army, after having contributed by its competitions of landing to train excellent pilots . The first aces.

Finishes before release

A small detail important for realism: A real 3D striated valve cap (anti-slip) has been created. It's not a big deal, but it had to be there.

Mechanics, hands full of grease, can easily unscrew it to inflate the wheels. 😎

the work is coming to an end. the new Potez 25 3D spoked Wheels - Chris Eagle, available in 4 textures from the 1936 Spanish War, is being prepared to leave the hangar.

Thanks a lot for your support 😊

Tires finishes (Brand, type and size)

If the brand and type of Michelin tires were marked on the tire, important information was missing: The tire size. A web search was unsuccessful. This is why, I contacted the archivists of the Michelin company in France and in the Air and Space Museum (Bourget) by phone, and I left a request on several forums including the Aerostories forum (technical forum). Finally), after 2 and a half weeks, I gathered the information and cross-checked the sources.

I was finally able to determine this dimension for the potez A2 (Spanish Civil War) which is 800 x 160. (sources Dominique Rouchon, Aerostories technique). First I received a dimension of 900 x 200. But this dimension was for the Potez 25 TOE (theater of external operations) in the East and Asia (Indochina 1950s). According to Dominique Rouchon: "A little research gives me 800 x 160 tires for the European Potez 25 which should be closer to the truth for a French Potez 25 A2. In view of the use and more particularly of the terrain encountered by TOE, it seems normal that their tires (TOE) are oversized "

Other important technical info: "The higher weight of the P 25 TOE required the use of larger tire; 900 x 200 mmm to compare with the 800 x 160 mm and 800 x 175 mm in 1930 of the P 25 A2 ” ( sources: D. Rouchon, The book "Potez 25" by "Avions Team" Histoire de l'aviation N°1 and  Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego w Krakowie)

So the dimension of 800 x 160 on the Potez 25 A2 has been added to the tires.

This postpones the release of this modified Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle, but as usual, I never release a project until I have worked out the details. Quality and detail are more important than quantity and approximate completion. And even if it is impossible to reach 100% realism, getting close to it is always gratifying for the designer and the user.

Now I am working on the last finishes. Wheel axles, landing gear ... etc.

Thank you for your support in this project. Sorry, but The longer the delay, the better the result 😊

The back pad (rear stand) of the Potez 25 is (according to sources in my possession) in ash wood.I am still trying to find out if this wood pad was natural or painted and varnished. Ash wood is hard and resistant, but it is easy to work and particularly elastic. ... Ash is a very flexible wood that was used in the past for the manufacture of arches. It has also been widely used in aircraft manufacturing.

For info

Hello friends,

I just had a long phone interview with Mr. Michel F., the french designer and maker of the reproduction of the Potez 25 from the Air and Space Museum. A charming and very competent gentleman of 83 years old with whom we have befriended and I plan to visit him at his invitation. He lives two hours by train from Geneva.for now, he will send me the plans and photos of the A2 Potez from his huge archive collection. This will help me  to discover the colors and details of this plane to allow me to move towards more realism in the design of this project. (version 1 and more)

Cheers.😊

WIP Info about the new POTEZ S5 & P2  -  Ñ3 & Ñ4 in 4 version "White Belly" and "Green Fuselage" named:
Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle

NEW INFO : Tires (Brand, type and size)

The very first POTEZ from 1925 - 1927 were fitted with tires from the 100% French brand HUTCHINSON (Paris). Several models of rims fitted them (700 x 160, 800 x 160, 800 x 175 and 800 x 200). As said in my previous post, only the Potez 25s from the 1950s were fitted with 900 X 200 rims.
Later, the Potez 25s were also fitted with MICHELIN tires.

Information that is very difficult to find is starting to arrive in greater numbers. During the Spanish War, some Potez had original HUTCHINSON tires and others were replaced by compatible MICHELIN or other brands.

I am still thinking about whether I will change the brand or leave it. 😊

Hutchinson: 100% made in France tires which fitted the POTEZ 25 in 1925

"Sources: Guillaume ROBERT - Extract of report.
Chalette sur Loing - Hutchinson tires

Here is a report full of smells of rubber, oil, heat, but where many people also officiate to design and manufacture the tires of the brand (since 1853).

Because yes, despite a very Anglo-Saxon name which comes from its creator, the American Hiram Hutchinson, the Hutchinson brand is French and its tire production plant is located in Chalette sur Loing, near Montargis, in the south of the Paris region.

[...] Hutchinson retains most of its tire activity (which is only part of its activities) on French territory. "

NEW INFO : Tires (Brand, type and size)

As usual, I keep you posted on the progress of the work. I just had again a phone interview with Mr. Michel F., the french designer and maker of the reproduction of the Potez 25 from the Air and Space Museum. His computer is now down and in repair.

He will therefore send me the sources (documents, plans and photos) by post mail. I should receive his letter sometime next week. He assured me that the tires for the Potez 25 A2 1925 (Salmson) of Civil Spain War are HUTCHINSON 800 x 160 tires. So, I will change the tires brand and size soon.

I will receive photos of tires, the plan of the Potez for future improvements and photos of the wooden rear stand ash. Thank you for your patience.

Cheers.😉

NEW INFO : Tires (Brand, type and size)

Today I changed the brand of tires according to the latest information from Michel F. (manufacturer of the reproduction of the Potez 25 of the Air and Space Museum of Le Bourget).

The wheels of the Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle will now bear the following markings: HUTCHINSON - Made in France - 800 x 160 - Champs-Elysées - Paris. In fact, if the Hutchinson tire factory is located in the south of the Paris region (near Montargis), the head office and the stores have been since 1918 on the Champs-Elysées in Paris.

Thank you for your interest and support.😊

Landing gear finish

Gray-black metal parts: Median articulation, shock absorber, pins and joints.

The landing gear consists mainly of 4 legs, 2 of which are placed in a substantially vertical plane and comprising the H. POTEZ Type shock absorber .

These elastic legs operate by compression on rubber washers and do not have the drawbacks of the expanders in terms of mounting and solidity. They ensure a soft landing thanks to their elasticity, low loads and their progressive damping.

To allow the elastic legs to move under the chassis, the axle is articulated in the middle, the transverse forces are absorbed by a "V" fixed to the fuselage and whose lower point maintains the median articulation of the axis. The wheels are of the 800 x 160 type.

The rear stand is made of ash, held at the front by shock absorbers. It is oriented, moreover, on an adjustable sleeve in the lower part of the sternpost. (source real manual of the Potez 25 A2)

I am slowly approaching the end of this project. I'm still waiting for some information to make the maximum improvements to this version 1.0 of the Potez 25 3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle

Towards the end of this project

Hi friends

For the complete finishing of the modified aircraft, technical information arrives little by little. I have just received from a friend the book "Potez 25", a collective work containing dozens to hundreds of technical information, photos and detailed plans. I also expect a USB key from Michel F. with other technical information which is in transit by post.

Accept my apologies for the creation delay, but the 3D work (wheels and tires) required a lot of working time (as you can see above), in addition to the livery,  without counting my personal life and my work next door. I'm going on a trip tomorrow until Tuesday, and I really hope to release the project by the end of next week.

Better for you and for me a good work done in peace, than haste and approximate or bad work. 😉

Cheers

INFO: I saw somewhere on the forum that the "the Real-life Potez 25 replica is still under construction".

Potez exhibited at the Bourget Air Museum is not still under construction. Being friends with the designer and builder (Michel Flora) and having the plans, I affirm that this Potez is no longer under construction but that it has been exhibited since the mid-2000s as it is (Skinned, with visible interior parts) in the large hall of the Air Museum in Paris.

As usual you're the best !

Such details, tiny elements and accuracy what makes difference. But the path as I recognize most important is the relevance of history and your search for info and documentation.

WW memorabilia!!!! Thanks for bring us with another masterpiece!

Hi friends,

My own version of the modified "Potez 25  3D spoked wheels - Chris Eagle" of the Spanish Civil War 1936 (based on the initial Potez 25 model made by my friend Loïc @gouloo) is close to be released. All the modifications has been made with the written agreement of the initial author.

Final preparations before release

1. Creation of the manual and the presentation text.

2. Creation of an illustrated story of the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939.

⚠️ below)

4. Adaptation to this new version of the Potez 25 of the following liveries: Aeropostale @Chris Eagle, Armee and Aeronavale @afnavarro

⚠️This new version of the Potez 25 is a freeware and contains 7 liveries. (see photos below). It is a new Potez aircraft, whose Obj, Acf and Png files modified or new created are firmly protected by Copyright CCommons. The Copyright text against the use, integaration, modification or renaming of these objects in other projects and / or their redistribution (even as freeware) will be included in the presentation and in the pack, the manual and a copyright warning text.
